Silence

This weekend I learned that art of silence all over again. It became a necessary action because of the exceedingly horrendous noise that we are being bombarded with. What are these, you might ask? Or maybe you know them all too well because you, like me, are drowning in that same tidal wave of violent history by our own hands.

Our tragedies have lately all been related to a single weapon of destruction: Man. Whether it is with a gun, or weapons of mass destruction, or monetary enslavement, or whatever else is raining pain upon us all, we are becoming overwhelmed to the point of silence. That silence might be because we’re scared, overwhelmed, frustrated, or even that we have given up just a little. But that silence is telling, if you pay close attention to its placement.

Is it there to emphasize something important? Or maybe it wants us to think about what comes next? Whatever the reason, silence is just as important as words. They go together, as it does in most of what we create. They are that tell that people think hides their weakness, but actually might be hiding (or emphasizing) an unknown strength.

Silence is golden. We’ve heard that commandment and think that it’s an absolute. It’s not. It’s a tool that should be used to create a total picture. There is data in that silence, and it just might hold the most critical information that points to an answer. Noise can be painful, but silence is just as deadly depending on where it’s placed.

Is your silence hurting you? That’s a question that engulfed my mind this weekend. It started from one US town’s tragedy, but it echoed the tragedy that is eclipsing around the world. It’s not only the silence of our voices in critical conversations that are scaring me. It’s the silence of those who actually have the power to change things for the better that is frightening me. Words can move, and silence can immobilize. How scary that the lack of words can limit so much more than all of the painful words said together?

Note: Take this version of a song that we all hold as really incredible. A song incomplete can tell a story all on its own simply by paying attention to the silence (Bohemian Rhapsody – vocals only – found through Reddit):

http://youtu.be/QD9WCXHIY5w

Just one little change impacts powerfully. Silence has a power all of its own, and can be used for good and for evil – whether we intended to or not. Makes you think, doesn’t it?

For all of those whose lives have been impacted by a tragedy, you have my sincerest condolences. I won’t pinpoint a single location because it’s everywhere and needs to be acknowledged so that we can start to address when silence has to change to the necessity of voices.

Pachelbel Rant

So, Reddit led me to this video of Rob Paravonian talking about the same emotions as the equally hilarious original comment by SllyStringBandit:

Now, since I’m not a musician, I hadn’t realized just how much these notes are used in a huge number of songs that cross over a ton of genres. Though these sentiments are pretty hilarious, I totally feel for musicians as well. Actually, I feel for every creative person because we’re all inspired by someone else. Original content? Uh huh, right. We try, and there might be some variations, but they all can be traced back in time from some other source… like Pachelbel.

p.s. Now that you’ve heard this rant, don’t topics like copyright and their corresponding endless shackles of laws seem really ridiculous?

A Few More Fascinating Sites

The one awesome thing about the Internet is the beauty that can be experienced first hand in the most unlikeliest way. You wouldn’t expect that numbers can be depicted in waves, and yet we all know that they do indeed have patterns (like everything in nature). And sometimes we just need reach a zen moment by paying attention to nature. So here are two sites that let us immerse ourselves in the experience. Just let yourself go and see the wonders that nature has to offer.

Outspoken Sources – Fiction, Taboos, and Opinions by JESSE Novels

So, I’ve started a new category called Outspoken Sources. I’ve always wanted to share my blog with others, so that I can see topics from different perspectives. And what better way than to open up my blog to 2-way communications? I’ve tried to do that in my comments, but it’s not going well since I can hardly tell honest comments from spam any longer. There are days when I really despise this obsession with marketing ourselves at any cost. I want honest communications.

Well, here’s my first outspoken source who’s work I follow as he’s a writer like me. But he’s strong in a way that I wish I were. Jesse Abundis is a writer of a style that reaches for brutal honesty. He’s an indie artist and proud of that fact. And he’s fast becoming an online friend who reminds me to stay honest to my true self as well. For that alone, he’s someone to connect with. But if your mind hates the leisurely stroll, then you’ll love connecting with his writing. I know that my mind appreciates what he has to say.

So, without further ado, Jesse on handling taboo subjects (or any subject you want to tackle) creatively:

________

A few days back, comedian Daniel Tosh was doing stand-up at the Laugh Factory. He was starting to make a “rape joke” when a women in the crowd began to shout at him “rape isn’t funny, you shouldn’t say that, it’s wrong!” Of course if you’ve seen Tosh’s standup, then you know that he fires back at people who want to ruin the show as all stand-ups do, so he turned to the women and said “Wouldn’t it be funny if five guys raped you?”

That comment alone sent this woman into a fit of rage, so she took to her blog, Twitter, and everything she could to bash Daniel Tosh.

We know rape is a sensitive issue for any artist that takes on the matter, and sometimes one wrong move will get a you fire storm. Now, should’ve Daniel Tosh just not make a “rape joke” at all? No, he has the right to crack a joke at any subject. Should he apologize for what he said? “FUCK,  NO!”

First, he did nothing wrong. Everything done in film, music, writing, comic books, and even stand-up is fiction. No one gets harmed, though I’ve heard the argument “You applaud rape when you create things in that nature.” If that’s true, then every movie you watched that contained “action, blood, sex, gore, suicide, cheating spouse, killing of children, killing of animals, racist joke, racist joke against gays” are things you too are in favor of: See how stupid that sounds?

Artist aren’t monsters for creating the dark side of life. In fact, it shows how open we are to take on the matter, that we’re not narrowed minded, and we can take a joke. Will people embrace it? Some might and some might not, but that’s how it goes and you can’t change that.

Now, should’ve Daniel Tosh joked about “five guys raping you” to the women? No, you just don’t give people like that fuel to burn. It’s a big ‘no no’ because I’m not quite trusting of the woman’s own actions, such as why did she have to make a scene? Couldn’t she just simply walk out and then blog? No, she had to make this big scene to get everyone looking at her. That just screams 15 minutes of fame and a bitter hate for Tosh.

With people like that, you just can’t win because they’ll hound you to the bitter end. It happened to me with one of my stories, FAIRY GODMOTHER, but did I apologize? Hell, no. My art, my rules. If it bothers you, then turn around and walk away.

And this is a lesson all artists need to learn: Create what’s in your mind, and don’t let others censor your creativity. If they bash, then so be it. But they’ll be others who’ll love your work, no matter what. Don’t let one asshole spoil your creation. Let them shout at what you create, because that’s all any of us can do.

Google World Wonders

While we’re all lamenting about whether Google really adheres to their “Don’t be evil” ideals, we can all admit that they’ve got some pretty big ideas. Needless to say, I didn’t realize that their Street View images would turn into a project like this:

The Google World Wonders project is their way of making the world’s heritage locations accessible to the world. No more jetting off to the location to be immersed in the experience. Now, while the impact is more dramatic when you’re actually there, this is a way of supporting these sites economically and ecologically.

Here, take a peek at what you’ll see:

Just think of what Google is actually doing with this particular project (and many of their others): they’re preserving all of our history from moments in time. Sure, like any business, they sometimes make questionable decisions. But that might be because of the pressures that our business world places on people to go after the wrong rewards. Time isn’t just money. It’s also about memories, experiences, sharing, connecting, and all of those other collaborative actions we take in creating this life we all live.

It’s pretty damn hard to live a life full of pure intentions, though it doesn’t stop most of us from trying. We’re not going to make everyone happy. But we can all make sure that the “Don’t be evil” mentality filters from the top to the bottom, so that we all try to be our best. That’s not asking too much in a world that we all share together.

This project makes me want to go explore! How about you?

Finding Ties That Bind

Sometimes comments make you chuckle – like this one from Boing Boing. Maggie did a piece on Girl Scout cookies that spoke of the eternal struggle over which is the best type of cookie. Now there are as many ideas about what constitutes a good cookie as there are places from the cookie’s history. Depending on where you’re from and how you were raised, your ideas about ingredients and taste will differ as widely as the human population itself.

Thin Mints are the best! No, we love Samoas!! Let’s here it for Tagalongs!!! Rabble, rabble, rabble…

The cries in the night ring out in support of their taste bud’s delight. But like Scott says, the love of cookies should unite people. Or the love of dessert. Or the love of mashed potatoes. Yep, we all have things that we have to sample (gorge on). And we all know that we’ve not come close to sampling all that’s out there in the world.

Here’s to finding the ties that bind. We all have to eat. Maybe that’s a way to hug the world? There’s a saying that the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach. We should create and share foods so people get to know one another better through our senses. After all, who doesn’t love a good dessert? There’s enough flavors for everyone to love one.

A Reminder Of Some Place Precious – HOME

Wow, so this is what an aurora looks like from outer space? And isn’t Earth beautiful?

http://youtu.be/4PmnENR9vp4

NASA is our space lens that lets us see our world from a whole new perspective. Most of us will never have this opportunity to see our planet as the true cradle of our civilization that it is. After such an experience, every astronaut comes back with a new understanding of just how precious our home really is. It would be worth it to create an immersive video room that allows every single human being on the planet to feel what it’s like to be suspending out in space, looking down on your home from a great distance than most of ever will attain.

From Space Quotations:

As I looked down, I saw a large river meandering slowly along for miles, passing from one country to another without stopping. I also saw huge forests, extending along several borders. And I watched the extent of one ocean touch the shores of separate continents. Two words leaped to mind as I looked down on all this: commonality and interdependence. We are one world.

— John-David Bartoe

This is an important conversation that the space program and science allow us to start. Our world as seen from another perspective. Suddenly, what’s truly important becomes abundantly clear in a place where you’re truly alone.

Moon Landing

How about a little whimsy with your morning coffee? I found this image (on Reddit) which takes your breath away if you’re a lunar fanatic like I am. My head is running rampant with potential story lines from this one. Whoever did this image did an incredible job, don’t you think?

Yep, a new twist to those conspiracy theories about the Moon Landing. Bet they never thought of this approach.

Newsroom’s Most Honest 3 Minutes

So, in this time of elections and national chest beating, we don’t always expect to hear honest answers. Especially when the source is the newsroom. Or in this case, the HBO series called The Newsroom. It’s not often that you’ll hear this type of rhetoric that speaks about our common perception that the US is the greatest country in the world. Lately, we haven’t been doing as great job of proving it as we once did. The levels of disillusionment continue to grow. Our politicians, heck all of our leaders, keep proving that they don’t have the answers that we desperately need.

I don’t have HBO so I haven’t seen this series, except through clips such as this. And frankly I haven’t been too convinced about just how good Hollywood still is. They’ve been showing that they’re only capable of perpetuating the myth of history. At most, our entertainment is usually mediocre, except for brief brilliant creations such as this that don’t come around too often (at least in the mainstream they don’t). Will this one last, or will it fall prey to the political bias that doesn’t want these words to spread? Unfortunately for status quo, these words already are…on mainstreet.

We’re way past worrying about what country is the greatest. How about we start to worry about the fact that we only have one planet on which we all live? There’s no escape when things fall over the cliff. We need to stop thinking wistfully about some barely remembered past and start to embrace our potential future. Are we going to keep beating the “America is great” drum? Or are we going to start changing the beat to “we’re all a necessary part of humanity”? That seems like it will get more traction with the global citizenry. After all, no matter where we live, we all believe in the life that we want to live. And life looks remarkably similar deep down in its bones, even if the surface might be a tad different.

Cherish the actions of good that we all do for one another. That’s what will lead to great dreams that will uplift us all. Not just one country, but the entire world…together.

– thanks again Reddit

p.s. Hollywood – if you really are so necessary, then why is Viacom demanding a BILLION dollars more to watch shows we already pay enough for (since there’s nothing new)? And why are you forcing laws (international and domestic) to be made to protect your industry if you believe in a free market? That’s the kinds of honesty people want to talk about.

A Thought About Leadership

So, we’re still talking about leaders as some kind of necessity in life. I’m not so sure anymore. But what I can say about this image of Obama is that it’s showing something we hardly see anymore in any of our leaders. Sure, a lot of us (including me) is disillusioned about Obama’s accomplishments. But we also realize that it’s not his fault alone. All of the leaders had a part in destroying our potential.

Ask yourself how often you will see a leader who is not primped to within an inch of his life for a public appearance? How many leaders will face conditions that are out of their control in order to try to be the voice of wisdom? How many leaders even remember what true wisdom is? We live in a time where there’s a leadership vacuum. While there might be leaders doing important work down in the trenches, there are very few in the visible spectrum (like politics) that know how to do an honest day’s work.

I’m one of those people who believes that good leaders give the spotlight to those who have allowed him (or her) to reach the highest of positions. If you’re worried about your power, your status, your earnings, or anything that is remotely personal, then stop claiming that you’re a good leader. The term good or great is not a grade. It’s selfless activity. It’s doing for a greater good that is larger than yourself.

Find us a leader who will face the tempest while still listening to those around, and then act ethically for the greater good so that they all have a promising future. Only those who fit this description should apply to a position of leadership. Yeah, we have a major shortage of real leaders, don’t we?

This social period is showing us that leaders aren’t always necessary. If we all pitch in, then we’re all part of the leadership paradigm. That’s 21st century leadership.
